What does it mean when diabetics toenails start to flake?

my mother wanted to know. What does it mean when diabetics toenails start to flake?
Go to the hospital now. That infection will get worse. I am sorry but my grandmother had that problem. Are her legs swollen beyond belief and too sore to touch? Do they stay swollen no matter what?

Please take her to the hospital before it turns to gang green and she dieds.

I watched my grandma die from that and its a slow painful death that nearly made me have a serious melt down. What does it mean when diabetics toenails start to flake?
It means they have a fungal infection and should head to the doctors immediately.
