What are some signs of ingrown toenails?

I think I have one or am starting to get one, because the big toe on my right foot has started to hurt on one side of the nail, but I'm not sure.

What are some ways to prevent/treat an ingrown nail? I really can't see a doctor or something because I have no health insurance and cannot afford to pay out-of-pocket.What are some signs of ingrown toenails?
Get some Epsom salt from the pharmacy department of the store (it's really cheap - a buck or so) and add it to some hot water, then soak your foot. This will soften the nail and prevent infection, and you should be able to avoid going to the doctor.

Also, take some Advil if it's swollen. What are some signs of ingrown toenails?
okay it will hurt kinda, but take the long poky thing in the nail clippers for cleaning your nails and then put it in the side of the nail and pull out the edge (it is kind of hard to explain) to make sure that the nail does not grow in the wrong direction. If you actually understand what I am trying to explain you might have to keep up with doing that to keep your toenail normal...
Cut a V in the middle of your toe nail that it is happening to, it should clear up in a day or so. It's properly cutting the nail to prevent it from happening.
ew ew ewwwww i think i lost my lunch..............nahhh im just kiddin. sorry i cant help ya all i can say is u might wanna see a doctor b4 this gets outta hand....
You have trimmed your toe nails incorrectly.

You may see flesh that is covering the edge of the nail. That is mostly callus.

You need to carefully trim the nail closer, down the side of the toe.

Keep a little bit of cotton stuffed between the flesh and nail untill the nail grows normally.

When you trim your nails, do not trim down the sides as you do finger nails. Cut straight across, leaving a bit of nail on the sides. You can trim just a bit of any sharp ends.

This prevents flesh from growing over the nail.

Apply iodine to prevent infection.
cut the nail straight across in the meantime use peroxide and soak your foot in epson salt water directions on the box.
that's a sure sign - and you should go to the Podiatrist - because she/he has a special tool to pull the ingrown toenail up out of the toe - only thing is - they do grown back! Even though you cannot afford - get on a payment plan or something - your feet are worth it - because in the long run it can only get worse. It should not be a huge cost - and see if they do some medical procedures free - it cost nothing to ask. Speaking about your case is worth it.
Swelling, where the nail starts to rub on the skin. if its infected, pus...where your w.b.c's are trying to fight the infection...thats of course if you dont remove the part of the nail thats causing it....if you leave it untreated, your toe will swell and swell until it becomes so painful that you WILL pay whatever price to have someone remove it!!!

it the nail is not at that point, you can get try and clip the corner of the edge of the nail that is starting to embed itself into your toe. you can purchase scissor like nail cutters, or nail cutters that are designed with a semi-long curvy tip specifically for ingromn nails....and just very carefully snip the nail away, but (and i stress this part heavily!!!) DO NOT leave any fragments of nail left uncut in your toe, as it will continue to grow and even more painfully embed itself into your toe.....make sure to sterilize whatever you use to extract the nail with alcohol, especially if you already have infection....

how to prevent them, let your nails grow a little past the groove on the corner of your toes, and never cut your toenails in a rounded way, always cut them straight.....

without consulting a doctor, i think thats the best you can do...REMEMBER: STERILIZE!!!
It can get infected. Try peroxide.
soak it, wear sandals, if that dont help after a week, go see a doc. I dont have insurance either, paid 400 last week, and have to get a second one done in a while, anothr 400.. its expensive, but after a while, u will hurt so bad, you will think its worth it. like i did, the toenail starts going through the skin, and you will literally be able to pull out pieces, but never all of it. go see a doctor now, its cheaper if u catch it early.
pain in the corner of your toe. it hurts. try gently lifting the corner of the nail and stuff ing LITTLE scrunched up balls of cotton under the corner of the nail till it grows out. it will take some time and patience to stuff them in there but it will help the discomfort. .
pain is the first sign

PAIN!!!!!!!!!
To make it from getting worse, soak your toe in water that is warm, but not too uncomfortable. This will soften it up, so it won't grow into your skin. Do this once a day. It will also make your toe feel a little better. Do not pick at it, that will only make it worse. Put Peroxide on it, to kill the germs so it won't get infected.

Some signs of an ingrown are redness and swelling of the toe, can't put a shoe on without it hurting, and a lot of pain!

Go to a doctor to see what you should do. That would only cost you about $20. You might have to get surgery, depending on how bad it is.
ouch...i feel sorry for you. but if u feel pain then that is probably a sign of an ingrown toenail. and if ur toenail is starting to look crooked and the nail isnt growing straight then you need to get it treated immeadiately.....b4 if gets out of hand.

good luck.
Along with soaking it, another good tip is this...

Use toe nail clippers to cut a little V shape in the center of your nail. This way when the nail grow it will be pulled towards the center and hopefully help your ingrown. I know tihs sounds like baloney but it was recommended by my doctor. There are also little ingrown nail kits your can buy at the pharmacy that you wear over night and are real cheap.
Here's a good way to prevent them, and to start healing up the one you have....with nail trimmers, cut a small v in the middle of your toenail that you think is ingrown. As the nail continues to grow out, the v will be closed up by the growth and the edges of the nail that are ingrown will be ';pulled'; out to fill up the v space you made. Make sense?
Ask my grandpa he is a padiatrist (foot doctor) seriously.
Pain is really a sign of ingrown toe nail..

I use a nail file to lift it out of the bed .. that hurts but it doens't grow into the skin anymore.

cut toe nails straight across.. never trim like you do your fingernails.

I've had it like 5 times and i usually just try to cut the nail where it hurts and it would go away eventually..but i do know someone who's had to get surgery for it.. (yikes)
unless you stubbed your toe it sounds like an in-growing toenail.

I had to have surgery through ignoring the problem, seek proper advise and help.

Good Luck.
If you can afford about $12 go see a nail salon. Most of the time if a started ingrown isn't bad yet, they can help you with it.

To prevent it, you need to grow your nail out so the corners do not get imbeded into your skin.
a lot of pain on the side that's ingrown and redness around it.
I had one there was pain on the side of my toe by the nail also it looked kinda red. I had to have it removed.
a buildup of skin on the upper inside corner of toenail (normally painful and discolored) and when you try to pull back the skin you cant find the edge of the nail
Signs of an ingrown toenail would be - redness, swollen, sore, infected looking. Get some Epsom Salt and soak your foot in that and warm to hot water.
That's probably it. You can get tools for digging out and cutting it. It will hurt like hell to do so. Then it will probaly grow back. I let mine grow out through the skin and now I don't have the problem anymore. (But it did hurt for a couple of months while letting it grow out)
When I get an ingrown toe nail my toe will hurt on the side that has the ingrown toe nail. I then cut it out with nail clippers. In three months or so I will have to redo it again, but it beats paying a Dr. To do it.';
Cut a ';V'; shape in the middle of your big toes and they will grow in toward the ';V'; and not into the side of your foot. Give it a couple of days to take effect but once it does you should feel better. You must also cut your toe nails this way everytime you trim your toe nails or they will come back. Good luck.
OOch! It is very painful! It could be red too which means it is already infected. Get to your doctor they can numb your toe and cut it out for you. Good Luck!
