Off the top of my head, if it was me, I'd keep the area moist/healthy with Neosporin, or perhaps Aquaphor.
If it's definitely coming off, it's probably ideal for it to happen before the race, but I wouldn't go out of my way to help it along and perhaps make it worse.
If it's still there come race day I expect I'd wrap the toe with athletic tape and rub Body Glide all over it. Good odds it may come off during the race and you might need to do a quick med tent stop.
I'd suggest you ask the marathoners on the boards at runnersworld.com, too.I'm running a marathon in six days and i know i'm losing a toenail. any suggestions on what i should do?
Grit your teeth! Good luckI'm running a marathon in six days and i know i'm losing a toenail. any suggestions on what i should do?
Try to get it off before the race. And in any case use vaseline on it for race day.
The general rule of thumb is to let it fall off on its own.
If it's causing you pain, you may want to consider clipping it down as far as you can get it. If you rip it off, you'll likely end up with a sensitive nailbed that will irritate you during your marathon.
I'd leave it be, and tape it down with a bandaid or piece of moleskin for the race.
